A nest full of these flying little demons can quickly become aggressive, sending you, your family and even your pets scurrying indoors for cover.
So, the question is, do they actually work? There are a ton of fake wasp nests out there, from the DIY varieties think brown paper bags, newspaper, and tape to the ready-made brands sold online and in stores. Fake nests work off the premise that wasps are extremely territorial and will stay away from an area that already has a nest in order to avoid confrontations.
So, hopefully, when they see your fake nest, they will think another colony of wasps has claimed your home and will fly right by, looking for greener and less dangerous pastures. The truth of the matter is that there is simply no clear evidence that fake nests are an effective strategy in wasp prevention. To make these nests, the wasps find weathered wood, sourced from old fences or porches, and chew this wood fiber into a paste-like pulp mixed with their saliva.
Then, the insects form this pulp into hexagon-shaped paper cells. At first, the workers make only as many cells as they need to hold their eggs. Eventually, however, the paper wasp nest will contain approximately cells. From the outside, these nests appear umbrella-shaped and often hang in protected areas like tree branches, eaves, porches and railings. Wasp nests look a lot like the paper nests built by other creatures like hornets and yellow jackets.
However, those insects cover their entire nest within an envelope of paper pulp while wasps leave their nests bare, and most yellowjackets build their nests underground.
These simple facts can help you with wasp nest identification. The nest constructed by a colony of wasps will last for only one year. She begins construction and produces the first wave of sterile workers. The colony grows and the roles shift. The queen is responsible for laying eggs and the workers are responsible for nest maintenance, defense, and getting food.
Fall comes, and a new queens are chosen. They mate and look anywhere they can for safe warm place to overwinter. The current queen dies and the colony starts to collapse. All the workers die off. Spring rolls around and an overwintering queen wakes up from her peaceful slumber. She looks for a place to make her new nest. Okay — Fine … And the Decoys?
