Luckily, a Plastic Opening Tool can be used to separate the clips from the outer cover. Simply insert the tool into the seams near the clip areas, and slowly pry the cover apart. You may need to use multiple spudgers or screwdrivers to help separate the cover from the inner chassis. The cover slides off once the back clips are pried apart, which makes it easier to grab a hold of the cover.
The top and bottom rails of the cover snap off from the inner chassis as you push forward. Some rubber padding keeps the hard disk in place, but a little push allows us to separate the hardware from the inner chassis. When reassembling, do not force the rubber padding back in if it does not fit, most often that means that you did not align the assembly properly.
Don't pull too fast! Some clips get in the way of the board, and you have to clear them by bending the outer frame slightly outwards. As you push the chassis away from the board, you may also have to push on the corner area to push the metal tab away from its rubber socket.
Please alter your instruction, and instruct people to open the case by push down the 2 clips on top and bottom via the holes in the top and bottom in the front of the case. This is meantioned before by "lemonshark10" and "nnnnnnnn". Admin: I would not pay for a site with incorrect instructions. Thanks man, I got this same type of case on my failed My Book, no screws anywhere on the outside.
Still under warranty so I should get a replacement, i put it back together very carefully and looks same as it was before opening. Freezing it gave me like 10 minutes at a time to work with it each time I froze it so i had to freeze it about 5 times 24 hrs at a time or overnight and rescue some data, happy to say I got all my irreplaceable stuff back Thanks again ;.
Reply 11 years ago on Step 7. Awesome little trick to have in the repertoire! They were sure to put it in an anti static bag as well just to be safe.
They had about 10min as well. They explained it as being a "warping" issue with some parts maybe the actuator? Reply 12 years ago on Step 7.
Yeah, he means he put it in his freezer to lower the temperature to make the hard drive work just long enough to get his data off. This is an old but useful trick for data recovery. There is no need to pop the edges the tabs merely slide through rails on the inside. The light on my drive blinked quickly continuously. Good luck! You might be able to do that upgrade. Or find a third-party enclosure and add whatever drive you want. Hi, thanks for your guide.
That newer version may not have a jumper. But after I placed it in a new dock and plug it into my mac, it prompts me to reformat the disk. What can I do to get my data out from this point? Please help! Thank you. Did you purchase the exact same model number Western Digital external drive, remove the new drive, and install the old drive? That is your only option to overcome the encryption chip.
The chip has to be identical between the external enclosures. Hi, I have a My Book for Mac 3TB which works fine until i had to remove the drive and use it in another project and then tried to put it back in its enclosure. Have I missed a step in preparing the drive to be reinserted? Any help much appreciated. I removed the drive from casing but there are 4 bolts sticking out and they have no screw indents to remove them NOW what I am considering sawing two of them off so i can slide it into a reader.
Any suggestions. All opinions are my own. Slide the clear plastic LED front panel conduit forward and remove. Remove the two screws holding the metal connector casing.
