In the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics, a company came up with a device which they started marketing to the health-conscious. It was called a Manpo-Kei. In Japanese, "man" means 10,, "po" means steps and "kei" means meter. So it was, literally, a 10, steps meter. The device was an early pedometer, based on the work of Dr Yoshiro Hatano, a young academic at Kyushu University of Health and Welfare. Dr Hatano was worried that the Japanese were busy importing a slothful American lifestyle, as well as a love of watching baseball, and wanted to help them get more active.
He reckoned that if he could persuade his fellow Japanese to increase their daily steps from 4, to around 10, then they would burn off approximately extra calories a day and remain slim. That, apparently, was how the "10, steps a day" regime was born. It was clearly a great marketing success. But is it still the most effective way to improve our fitness? Our aim was to do a small experiment in which we would compare the benefits and ease of doing 10, steps against something called, " Active 10 ".
With Active 10 you don't need to count steps. You simply aim to do three brisk minute walks a day. So I think I should increase my steps to 15, per day. I want to do more weight loss and toning, does that sound about right? Remember everyone, no fitness tracker is hundred percent accurate, so what I tend to do is look at tracker and subtract steps. No matter what it is quite helpful. Health first, complaints later. You have one body so take care of it. Congratulations to all those trying so hard.

For those asking about 30 min or 10, steps, I believe that years ago the Cooper Institute found similar benefits between people who did hardcore workouts once per day, and those who achieved 10, steps throughout the day.
Other research points out tremendous benefits of getting 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day. To me — the great formula is to combine the two: get in a 30 minute brisk walk each day, and smaller increments of steep throughout to hit the 10, step mark. This will help with losing weight, but the increased activity has even greater benefits!

Walking can have a lot of benefits for people of all ages. Here are some of the health benefits you can expect when you increase your daily walking:. Walking is good for the environment because it allows people to avoid using vehicles that pollute the air. However, short journeys that can be made on foot make it possible to avoid using vehicles altogether.
Considering the large proportion of short journeys that are made by cars, switching to walking can have a huge impact over time. If you find it difficult to substitute your daily commute with walking, why not consider walking once or twice a week? Every step you take literally towards a completely emission-free commute has a positive impact no matter how small it is.
Walking is definitely a more sustainable option for people than other transportation methods since there are no emissions resulting from walking and running. Does this mean you should always walk to work or school?
Not necessarily. There are a lot of factors that can affect your decision. Although buses and trains produce emissions, they significantly reduce your carbon footprint because you get to share them with others. Imagine everyone on your bus using a car and you can just about visualize the emissions that are avoided by using public transportation.
In addition, less traffic means less time spent inside polluting vehicles for everyone else. Another option that is totally emission-free is cycling. Check out my other article to find out how fast cycling can be in a city. The amount of free time you have is another consideration. Not only do you spend more time on the way, but you also have to account for the time it may take you to freshen up or shower once you reach your destination.
This may not be ideal for everyone especially when you have limited time. It might be worth it to wake up earlier though considering all the health and environmental benefits of walking. One last thing to consider is environmental effects other than emissions. It all depends which type of exercise you are doing too, for example, some studies have shown that sprinting or doing interval exercises daily could burn more calories when you finish you activity throughout the day or evening.
It also depends what kind of fitness levels you are in also as Laura Williams, a diet and fitness expert explain:. For them, walking 5, or 10, steps a day will improve their fitness. Follow Metro across our social channels, on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram. Poppy Logo.
