Freedom kitchens how much

Note: Ikea's drawers are metal-sided. With a Bunnings kitchen, you'd have to upgrade for drawers like this, further adding to the cost, and Ikea's wall cabinets use a suspension rail to help mount them to the wall, while the Bunnings cabinets are screwed directly into the wall.

Ikea is well-known for its basic modular-style flat-pack kitchens, with 21 front styles in various colours and materials. Similarly, Kaboodle Kitchen, sold through Bunnings, has many styles and modular size options, but also offers customers a 'cut-to-measure' service — at an additional cost.

This lets you adjust the width not height of selected doors, panels, benchtops and splashbacks to fit your space. Even though there's a multitude of styles and finishes to choose from, the materials used for flat-pack kitchens are standardised across the range for each retailer. Similarly, Ikea cabinets are made from particleboard and melamine, and use the German brand Blum for its hinges and drawers. The design of your new kitchen should not only look good but be functional.

Bunnings and Ikea both have instore and online 3D planning tools to help non-professionals design a kitchen, and they offer advice on how to make the most of your space. If you're not confident of your kitchen design skills, both stores offer expert help for a fee. CHOICE tip: You can save money by keeping your original gas and electrical fittings where they are, but this may limit your design options. Once a flat-pack kitchen's measurements have been checked, the design configured and style chosen, all of the kitchen's components — drawers, cabinets, cupboards, hardware — are selected and ordered.

Ikea offers several ordering options: "You can order your kitchen directly with Ikea or, for a second opinion or peace of mind, book an appointment at an Ikea store or online with one of our kitchen specialists to go through your plan to ensure you have everything you need and assist you with the order," Ikea's Daniel Hood says.

Ikea's kitchen components are generally readily available. The process is similar at Bunnings: "If guidance is needed, customers can book an appointment with a Bunnings instore kitchen expert, or an in-home consultation, for assistance to create and finalise their design and product order," says Mikrou. Your order can either be collected from your local Bunnings store or delivered to your home.

You'll save a lot of money on labour installing your own flat-pack kitchen. If you're handy with a hammer, know how to use a cordless drill and feel confident operating a jigsaw, by all means give it a crack. But we just didn't trust them and could sniff issues in the future, and there were too many compromises on what we wanted.

By the way Yes don't worry about the price as it will be available in a week or two believe me. Not sure. We got 3 metre cabinet 10 softclose drawers , plus 2 metres of overheads plus x pantry plus a x cabinet to house wall oven and micowave all built in plus a 2.

All this is covered by Ceasarstone and finished in 2pac. No handles. It feels like we got about 3 times as much as you and with 2pac. My feel would be that you could probably do at least as well by going direct to a cabinet maker and probably you should do a bit better.

Thanks everyone, great advice. I went around today and got some quotes and had a builder in, and it seems the general opinion is that 8. He offered to buy it all with me and he can fit and install it, so they brings me some comfort! I've learnt so much in 1 day and am so glad I didn't push the button on the first quote!!!

We had similar design decisions to make in our kitchen makeover and out layout is not dissimilar to yours. If any ceiling work needs doing, do it now — see off any mess and dust before the new cabinetry goes in.

Apply an undercoat on the walls and ceilings; apply the first coat of paint, if you like. Install cabinetry, ensuring it is all level. Measure for benchtops. While waiting for benchtops to be delivered, install flooring. Installing flooring prior to finishing the cabinetry, if you can, is much less hassle.

Install benchtops, then splashback. If tiles you will have to grout. Seal areas where required, such as where the splashback meets wet areas. Plumber and electrician return to install sink, taps, dishwasher, appliances, stove and so on. Finish any carpentry; make sure all doors and drawers work correctly. Final coat of paint, then clean up.
